ONE RAT in particular has been
responsible tor shaping modem
pop music. Buddy Holly was a Rat
and more than anyone. his adven-
turous and oiten passionate style
created the foundations for a whole
'range of mehnerisms and inileo—
tlons‘. all 01 which can be heard in
. virtually every performer since.
.Ftoy Orbison was also another pes-
‘slonete'Rat. who under his lunar
'lniiuence-‘produced songs and

THE STRONG and durable Buitelo
has contributed massively to pop
music, especially rock and roll. The
undisputed founder. Bill Haley. was
a Buffalo and without him and his
Comets there would have been no
teenage revolution. But the years
following have seen only a handiul
hit the chem. The most typical. in
terms of sheer Bufleio power. is
Bruce Springsteen. Boy George is
another Buttelo. as is the great
backroom boy. George Martin.

TIGERS are people who often have
too many bright ideas, which in the
simple one-track world 4)! pop
means they ilnd the medium a
struggle. There again. Tigers do
tend to run out oi steam. which is
not a goodidea on a massive world
tour. Karen Carpenter was a bril-
liant and vibrant Tiger who sadly
ran out 01 breath far too early, as
was Eddie Cochran. Phil Everiy has
managed to last the distance. but
with dlitlcuity. Connie Francis is
still around.

DRAGONS lead the carnival and
there is a sense that pop music is
one long celebration with the
whole world as the stage. Not sur-
prisingly. Dragons have produced
more great performers then any
other sign. John Lennon and Ringo
Starr were essential to the Beatiee'
success. The artist with most hits
in Britain. and unquestionably the
most durable is Citli Richard. Then
there's Phil Spector. both Righ-
teous Brothers, Adam Faith. Torn
Jones. Mentred Mann. Neil
Diamond, Joah Baez, Bing Crosby.
Bo Diddley.

SNAKES have produced more
beautiful muslo than any other
sign. In pop music though. the sing-
ing and the writing are seldom eon-
teined in the same Snake. it seems
Snakes are just as happy to pro-
duce the songs and let others do
the pertormlng. in either case. they
do a typical Snake job. and flood
their work with beauty and wit. Bob
Dylan might have done better not
to have taken up singing, but his
songs endure. Although dates vary
about Nat King Cole. l have him as
a Snake. Certainly no one sang
better. Att Gartunkei does both, but
not so Hank Marvin.

est llgures. He is a typical Horse;

THE NEED to perform is dominant
in e Goat's make up and Mick Jog-
ger is picai o1 hie elgn. His music
is pe menoe based. soundly:

tunelese and repetitive on race .
Keith Richard is also a Goat and in
Chinese terms, not the bestot part-
nerships. More tuneful. it not as

John Denver and Lonnie Don-

the conclusion that when it comes

WHEN you look down the list 01 pop
greets, Monkeys do not feature in
large numbers. Perhaps the
wheeler-dealer in them is more
keen on the agency side 01 the
business; certainly one feels Tim
Rice spendses much time with his
accountant as he does with his
rhyming dictionary. But most origi.
nal pop composer in Britain is Ray
Davies oi the Kinks. Originality is
rare in 3 Monkey, but Ray Davies
has it in abundance. He is admired
by his peers and during the Sixties
was copied mercilessly.

pop. Pete Townshend is e Rooster
and so is Eric Clapton. Their songs
are pretty dull. but it's difficult to
target them as periormers. A better
example at Roosters in pop is the
song-writing partnership oi Leiber
fhnc: Stoller. Love Me Tender was

DOGS have left a huge mark on the
world oi rock and pop. it seems
that the need to please large
groups of people finds an outlet by
performing on stage and selling
billions 01 records. The biggest
suiting artists of all time were born
in a Dog year: Elvis Presley,
Michael Jackson and Madonna. it
you add the namee 01 en eatiier

and David Bowie,, you get some
idea of the pop Dog's impact.

ting on a show. But the world of
Kori music has few Plus to grace its

oi oi fame: Perhaps it’s that the
really big bucks are to be tound
when pop is combined with other
skills. like those found in the cin-
ema. And Pigs do like to make 3
bob or two. Even so. Elton John
has done OK ior hlmeeii end I don't

David Essex haye sleepless nights
worrying how to pay the mongaue.
